Apples to Fabric: The Adam Sheet

Apples to Fabric: The Adam Sheet

Have you ever thought about the amount of waste pomace generated from the apple juice you drink every day? In Japan, design studio, Sozai Center, has managed to turn this “trash” into a high-end fabric called Adam Sheet! Not only is it soft and durable, but it is also waterproof, scratch-resistant, and can be used to make clothing, accessories, furniture, and even phone cases.

What is Apple Pomace Fabric?

Adam Sheet is a flexible sheet material made from a mixture of apple waste and bioplastic. Its raw materials come from the core, flesh, and seeds left over after apple juice processing. After special processing, these materials are combined with eco-friendly bioplastics to create a new type of biodegradable material that is machine-washable and durable.

The Manufacturing Process of Apple Pomace Fabric

Adam Sheet is not simply a pressed sheet of apple pomace. It goes through a series of processes:

  1. Pomace Processing: The residue (flesh, core, and seeds) left after apple juicing is collected, dried, and ground into fine powder.
  2. Bioplastic Blending: The apple pomace powder is combined with plant-based bioplastics (such as PLA or PHA) to form a moldable material.
  3. Molding and Curing: The mixture is shaped through processes like heat pressing or injection molding and then treated on the surface to enhance its water resistance and wear resistance.
  4. Dyeing and Texturing: Natural dyes can be used for coloring, and leather-like textures can be embossed to improve its aesthetic appeal.

This process not only reduces the use of chemical additives but also significantly lowers energy consumption compared to traditional synthetic leather.

Five Advantages of Apple Pomace Fabric

  1. Eco-friendly and Sustainable: Traditional leather and synthetic material production often leads to pollution, while apple pomace fabric directly utilizes waste pomace, reducing landfill waste and carbon emissions.
  2. Resource Recycling: Apple cores and seeds, which are usually discarded, are “upcycled” into valuable materials in Adam Sheet, promoting a circular economy.
  3. High-Quality Performance: It is soft and skin-friendly while also being waterproof and scratch-resistant, comparable to traditional synthetic leather.
  4. Versatile Applications: It can be used in a wide range of scenarios, from furniture surfaces to fashion accessories.
  5. Easy Cleaning and Maintenance: It can be cleaned easily with water or neutral detergents.

What Can Apple Pomace Fabric Be Used For?

  1. Small Accessories: Apple pomace fabric is suitable for making various small accessories, such as handbags, wallets, business card holders, and phone cases, giving these products a unique eco-friendly touch.
  2. Furniture Surface Decoration: It can be used as a decorative material for furniture surfaces, such as tabletops, chair backs, and cabinet doors, adding a natural and eco-friendly style.
  3. Bag Manufacturing: With its high water resistance and wear resistance, it is ideal for making bags like backpacks and handbags.

From the residue of a glass of juice to high-end fashion items, the creation of apple pomace fabric proves that “waste is just a resource in the wrong place.” Perhaps in the near future, our clothes, furniture, and even car interiors will be made from these “fruit waste products.” The combination of environmental protection and technology is quietly changing the world.
